With profound sadness and endless love, we announce the passing of our beloved Tommy Lee Highsmith on Thursday, July 16, 2026. While our hearts are broken, we are incredibly grateful for the gift of his life, the love he shared so freely, and the countless memories that will remain with us forever.
Born and raised in Newport News, Virginia, Tommy was proud of his hometown and the lifelong friendships, experiences, and memories it gave him. He carried that deep sense of community and connection with him throughout his life.
Tommy followed his passion for golf and made it his career as a golf professional. He spent many meaningful years at Kingsmill Resort, where he shared his knowledge, love, and appreciation for the game with countless golfers, colleagues, and friends. Tommy was respected not only for his skill and dedication, but for his patience, kindness, and the genuine way he encouraged everyone he met. The relationships he built through golf became an extension of his family.
Above all else, Tommy’s greatest joy was his family, whom he loved deeply and devoted his life to. He is survived by his wife, Vicki; his children, Stephanie, Cassie (Jackson), Corbin (Huey), and Amber; his beloved grandchildren, Cole, Lucas, Allie, Harper, and soon-to-arrive Wyatt; and his brother, Ray (Jennifer). Nothing brought Tommy more happiness than watching his family grow, celebrating their accomplishments, and simply sharing time together — especially those special moments gathered around the backyard pool.
Tommy was preceded in death by his loving parents, Shirley and Ken Highsmith, and his beloved nephew, Zachary. We find comfort in knowing that he is reunited with those he loved who went before him.
Tommy faced his battle with cancer with remarkable courage, grace, and determination. Even through the most difficult days, his love for his family never wavered. His strength, humor, and unwavering spirit inspired everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
Though our hearts ache from his absence, we find peace knowing that Tommy is now at rest. His legacy is one of unconditional love, quiet strength, loyalty, and a life beautifully lived. He leaves behind a family who adored him and countless friends whose lives are better because they knew him.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Virginia Peninsula in Tommy’s honor.
Tommy will be missed every single day, but he will never be forgotten.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Warwick Moose Lodge, 1711 Warwick Moose Lane, Newport News, Virginia 23606 on Sunday, August 16 at 3:00 p.m.

Tommy always made me smile whenever we encountered each other. As my neighbor for 60 years, he always played tricks on my family, i.e. piled snow up against my front door so I couldn’t get out. He also helped me whenever I needed help around the house/yard. Loved it when he would just stop by and just talk.
Teresa and I only knew Tommy for the last few years. We felt his big heart and unconditional love during the first few times that we met him. His humor, wit and smile always made a positive impact of your day whenever he was there and will never allow us to forget him.
Also, Teresa has said that Tommy does not get a raincheck on her golf lesson so she looks forward to seeing him again and he better be ready.
Please know Vicki and your girls that you all are in our thoughts and prayers during this time.
