Tina Marie Stoops Thornton, 64, passed away on Thursday, April 16, 2026. She was a native of Newport News and a graduate of Warwick High School. Tina was a First-Class Sheet Metal Mechanic, having worked for Newport News Shipbuilding and later at Newport News Peninsula Billiards. She was enrolled in The Sacred Heart Association.
Tina cherished her parents and appreciated their guidance in raising hardworking, productive citizens. She found joy in spending time with her family and remained deeply family-oriented. Tina was an excellent cook and the foundation of the family, leading with intelligence, streetwise sensibility, and foresight. Organized and purposeful in her actions, she was kind, loyal, and never gave up on those she cared about.
Her legacy of hard work, love, and compassion will live on in the lives of those who were blessed to know her and those close to her. She will surely be missed by everyone who knew her.
Tina was preceded in death by her father, Robert Lee Stoops, Sr. She is survived by her husband, Lewis Silas Powell; her son, Shawn Patrick Thornton, Sr.; her grandchildren, Kaley Nevael Thornton, Aaliyah Grace Thornton, and Shawn Patrick Thornton, Jr.; her mother, Mary Ann Stoops; two sisters, Virginia Harden (Gary) and Mary Ann Robinson (Donnie); brother, Robert Lee Stoops, Jr.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A private Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
