Shirley Bunting Early

Shirley Bunting Early was united with her Heavenly Father on Sunday, September 13, 2026. Shirley was a devoted wife, a wonderful mother, a loving grandmother, great-grandmother, and a treasured friend. She always had a kind word for others and a heart ready to serve. Her life beautifully reflected faith, compassion, hard work, true grit, and determination. At a young age, Shirley married Robert C. Bunting, Sr., and together they had three children: Debra B. McLellon (Roger); Joan Gummo (Alan); and Robert C. Bunting, Jr. (Susan).
Her growing family brought her immeasurable happiness. Her grandchildren include Brian McLellon (Whitney); Craig McLellon (Ashleigh); Carley Brown (Craig); Emily Heavner (Justin); Tucker Gummo; and Robert C. Bunting, III (Gabby). Her beloved great-grandchildren include Robert and Rose McLellon, Cannon and Charlotte McLellon, Leigh Overall, Russell Brown, and Hudson and Brooks Heavner.

Later in life, after Roberts’ passing, Shirley married William L. Early, with whom she shared many happy years until his death.

Shirley was also blessed with a devoted caregiver and friend in Nadine Parrish, whose unconditional love and steadfast dedication brought Shirley great comfort. Shirley placed her faith in the Lord at an early age, and that faith remained steadfast. She was actively involved in both Bethel Baptist Church and Northside Christian Church and was always willing to serve.

Shirley stood faithfully beside Robert as he earned his degree in drafting/architecture, and later, while establishing his building business. Her encouragement and support during those early years helped create a family legacy that remains deeply rooted in the generations that followed.

One of Shirley’s greatest passions was caring for senior citizens. Throughout her life, she lovingly cared for them through service and many memorable travel adventures. Her compassion brought friendship, happiness, and a sense of belonging to many.

As a founding member of the Poquoson Yacht Club, Shirley enjoyed countless weekends boating with fellow members, to a weekend destination or just gathering for a lively river tie-up party. Shirley also cherished her friends at the Warwick Moose Lodge, celebrating and dancing with them on many special occasions.

Shirley possessed many wonderful gifts, and music was certainly among them. A talented, self-taught pianist and guitarist, she formed several bands and served as lead vocalist. Through her music, she shared joy with charitable organizations and countless special occasions.

Shirley could do it all. She was her family’s beloved prayer warrior, giving them both strength and hope. She taught those she loved to remain faithful, giving unconditional love. Her faith, joy, and generous spirit will live on in each of them.

The family will receive friends on Friday, September 18, 2026, from 11:30 a.m.- 12:30 p.m. at Peninsula Funeral Home, 11144 Warwick Blvd. Newport News.

Burial will be private.

MOMMA SHIRLEY…she always loved it when I called her that. And, I meant it with intense and loving sincerity. I truly thought of her as my second mother over the 65 years of loving interaction with our family and especially my mother, Irene Power and my father, Raymond Power. My mother, Irene and momma Shirley were such great and loving lifelong friends. Now they are reunited in God’s heavenly paradise. I can only imagine the joy they are sharing.

Such great memories of genuine fun and love with momma Shirley. So many, many sweet stories to tell. Impromptu get togethers, jam sessions, family reunions, summers at their annual Va.Beach vacation for the “girls”- they just laughed and cackled like teenagers getting away with something.

The common thread in all of my memories with Momma Shirley was such a truly honest and genuine love and care that she so easily imparted to me and all of our family.

I love you Momma Shirley. You always knew my heart and that comforted me. Give momma a big hug and kiss for Mikey❤️✝️!!

I was so sad to hear if Miss Shirley’s passing. I will always remember her infectious laugh, her genuine love and concern for others. My mom and I played BINGO with her the past few months. She spoke with everyone.

My fondest memory is from many many years ago when several of us went to see Conway Twitty perform. She was so much fun! I will cherish that day always.

My sincere condolences. You were all so very blessed.
