Sandra Rae Smith

Sandra Rae Smith, cherished daughter, sister, and friend, passed away on Thursday, March 20, 2025 after several years of declining health. The daughter of Al William and Marion Tallman Smith, she was born in Radford, VA, and moved to Newport News when she was 13 years old. She was a graduate of Warwick High School, class of 1959.

Beginning with her love of her cello as a young girl, music was always a very important part of Sandra’s life She attended Radford College and studied music. She spent many happy years singing in the choir at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church.
Sandra’s first employment was in the Treasurer’s Office of the City of Newport News. She then joined First City Bank of Newport News and, due to mergers, went on to Virginia National Bank, Sovran, NationsBank, and finally Bank of America from which she retired in 2003.

Sandra was quite a sports fan, enjoying watching golf, tennis, and many college games. She was a strong supporter of the University of Virginia teams, especially basketball.

Sandra was loving and generous with her family, and gatherings with them were a highlight of her later years. Her family loved her laughter and her keen insights into today’s world.

Sandra is survived by her beloved brother Ray T. Smith and his wife Linda, nephew Justin and his wife Tammy, and grand-niece Madeline. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother Bert.

A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, March 26 at 1:00 p.m. at Peninsula Memorial Park with the Rev. Marc Vance officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the St. Andrews Episcopal Church Memorial Fund, 45 Main Street, Newport News, VA 23601, or a favorite charity.
