Robert “Scott” Wright, of Hampton, VA, passed away on Saturday, August 22, 2026 at the age of 55. Scott lived life to the fullest, brought joy to so many, and was often heard stating and singing, “Rejoice in the Lord always.”

Scott was born on October 17, 1970 in Newport News. He attended Sarah Bonwell Hudgins as a preschooler and went on to graduate from Warwick High School. Many of his classmates and teachers became lifelong friends, forming the foundation of his robust social life including Sock Hops, Boy Scouts, Special Olympics, Breakfast with Santa class reunions, and so much more.

Scott “walked the talk,” rejoicing in his faith and finding happiness in everything, namely all genres of music, dancing, socializing, and sports. He is the only person that could get away with wearing Washington and Dallas football gear at the same time!

Known for his wit, Scott brought laughter, music, and lots of chatter wherever he went. He loved talking about his many friends at work, his girlfriends, food, football, baseball, basketball, music, wrestling, and Diet Cokes. He was always ready to “take a break” and drink a Diet Coke, preferably a 20 oz bottle. Having the family trait of stubbornness, Scott was also frequently known to say his favorite word, “No!”

More importantly, Scott found joy in loving others and was never afraid to say, “I love you.” Those who were fortunate to be beneficiaries of Scott’s boundless love and immense sense of humor included not only his family, but his extended family and friends. His Group Home family include Beverly, his chosen sister, Kathy, Myra, and all those that lived and worked at his Group Home. Because of you, we could have peace of mind and absolute trust that Scott was loved and had amazing care. For that, you have our eternal gratitude and will forever have a special place in our hearts.

We are equally grateful to everyone who nurtured Scott over the years, including his teachers, church family, neighbors, friends, as well as volunteers & staff in his programs over the years. We cherish you all.

Scott was a precious and genuine soul. He was opinionated, sassy, flirtatious, wicked funny, and most of all kind, and truly content. He demonstrated to all those he encountered what it means to “rejoice always” making it impossible for some of that joy he emanated not to rub off, even if just a little. Spending time with Scott and his larger than life personality was guaranteed to result in story after story and smile after smile and he leaves behind enough to last a lifetime.

Scott is preceded in death by his mother, Mary Watkins Booth Wright, his niece, Campbell Elizabeth Webb, and his dear aunt Pat Booth Purcell. He is survived by his father, James Robert “Jim” Wright; sister, Susan Wright Webb; nephew, Carter Scott Webb; aunt, Dolly B. Wright; Jeff Webb, and a host of cousins, friends and extended family.

Scott has left an indelible mark on our hearts and will forever be remembered and loved for the light he brought to our lives. From our family, to the community that embraced Scott, we thank you for loving him, as well.

In lieu of flowers, please consider contributing to the Hampton-Newport News Community Services Board, 300 Medical Drive Hampton, VA 23666 notating “In Memory of Scott Wright” so that others may have the wonderful opportunity to live in a group home as Scott did.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, August 29 at 2 PM at First Baptist Church, Newport News, 12716 Warwick Blvd in the Fellowship Hall at the back of the building. We invite you to dress casual and wear your favorite sports team attire. A reception will follow.
