Robert “Bobby” Atkins Spencer

Robert “Bobby” Atkins Spencer, 79, passed away peacefully on May 8, 2025. Born on August 11, 1945, Bobby was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Atkins and Roberta Spencer, and his eldest son, Scott. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Carolyn; his son Todd and daughter-in-law Joy; and his treasured grandchildren, Chase and Summer.

Bobby dedicated his professional life to serving his country. He spent 42 years in Explosives Safety at Naval Weapons Station Yorktown and Cheatham Annex. In addition, he honorably served for 30 years in the U.S. Naval Reserve, retiring as a Mineman Senior Chief Petty Officer in 1994.

Outside of his professional life, Bobby loved sports. An avid golfer, he carded seven holes-in-one throughout the years he played. He found great enjoyment attending Christopher Newport University football games with his family and was a lifelong Dodgers fan.

Bobby will be remembered for his boundless curiosity, intelligence, organization, and quick wit. He never met a stranger and made friends wherever he went. His passing is a tremendous loss for his family. He will be deeply missed.

A graveside service will be held at Peninsula Memorial Park on Thursday, May 15, 2025 at 3pm. All are welcome. There will not be a reception following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made to a veterans’ organization of your choice.

I met Bobby in his late teens when he showed up to take Carolyn on their first date. I didn’t know he would become the best brother-in-law a person could have. His 58 years with Carolyn proved he was also a great husband and father. Rest in peace Bobby, I’ll miss you.

Bobby was an amazing “Grandaddy” to his 2 beautiful grandchildren, who adored him. He was a great friend and sports buddy, attending the CNU Captains football & basketball games. He will be greatly missed. Fair winds, shipmate.
