With great sadness, the family of Patrick G. Papadopulos, PhD, announces his passing on Friday, May 22, 2026, from a sudden cardiac event. Born in Phoenix, AZ, in 1983, Patrick and his family moved to Newport News, VA, in 1985. Patrick received his Doctorate in Mathematics in 2016 from the University of Rochester in Rochester, NY. He received his Master of Science in Engineering-Computer and Information Science from the University of Pennsylvania and his Bachelor of Science Cum Laude from the University of Massachusetts. Patrick was a 2001 graduate of Peninsula Catholic High School.
Patrick was a Renaissance man with great kindness and compassion, who read the classics and the works of the great philosophers. He was also a published poet. A thinker and mathematician, as well as a gifted teacher, Patrick won multiple Excellence in Teaching awards at the University of Pennsylvania. He also received the prestigious Edward Peck Curtis Award for Excellence in Graduate Student Teaching at the University of Rochester.
He was an accomplished soccer player, a medalist in shot put and discus, and participated in many 100-mile bicycle races.
An extraordinary man, Patrick is survived by his mother, Nancy E. Papadopulos; his sister, Laura N. Papadopulos; his aunt, Patricia A. Nahormek, M.D.; and his brother-in-law, Christopher Stainback. He is also survived by his aunt, Diane Mansfield, Bernie Mansfield and cousin Alexandra Finnegan. He was predeceased by his father, George W. Papadopulos.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, June 17 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Peninsula Funeral Home. Burial is private.
