Nancy Jean Kitchen Shields

Nancy Jean Kitchen Shields, 97, passed away on Monday, February 2, 2026. She was a native of Newport News and a resident of York County. Nancy was employed as a PSO with the Hampton Police Department and served for 43 years. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Hampton.

Nancy was preceded in death by her husband, Norwood S. Shields; parents, Jesse Ernest Kitchen and Mary Daisy Pressley Kitchen; six sisters; and three brothers. She is survived by her daughter, Sylvia Jean (Jeannie) Hill; granddaughter, Heather Roxanne; grandson, Graham; five bonus grandchildren, Samuel, Nicholas, Ashleigh, Ben, and Caroline; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Nancy had an outgoing personality, loved telling stories about her time at the Hampton Police Department, and enjoyed cooking, shopping, and watching birds at home. She was a loving and generous mother and grandmother. Her legacy was in the relationships she made with everyone she encountered. From the stories she told to the advice she gave, everyone who met her was left with her wisdom.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, February 11, at 1:00 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 514 S. Armstead Avenue, Hampton, Virginia. A reception will follow at the church. Burial will be private.
