Michael P. Smith, 50, passed away at home in Newport News on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, with family. Michael was a native of Poquoson, VA. He worked most of his career as a Senior Electrical Designer at Newport News Shipbuilding, Gibbs & Cox, Marinette Marine, Textron Marine, and finally, as an Electrical Estimator at Eastern Shipbuilding Group.
Michael was preceded in death by his parents, Douglas Smith and Goldie Smith. He leaves behind his brother Jeff Smith and sister-in-law Michelle Smith from Newport News; nieces Lindsey Rami (Himay), Alexis Tippett (Trevor), and Sydney Smith from Newport News; uncle David Smith (Marsha) from Chesterfield, VA; Sam Capino (Marty) from Yorktown, VA; Rick Capino (Tara); and his beloved dog Slash.
The family will receive family and friends on Saturday, June 21, 2025, from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. at All Generations Church, 28 Harpersville Rd, Newport News, VA 23601. Following the visitation, a memorial service will take place at 1:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the American Cancer Society, https://donate.cancer.org.
Arrangements are under the care of Peninsula Funeral Home.

Enjoyed our friendship at Eastern Shipbuilding Group during our stay! He would laugh at some of my lame jokes, as he had a great heart!!.. I miss my ole squirrel master!!..Rest in Peace, my Brother!!

When Mike lived in Menominee Michigan, he lived behind our home and he became a part of our family. Mike had a huge heart. Our family always called him Big Mike. And we were sad when he moved away, but stayed friends thru Facebook. GOD truly has a wonderful angel to watch over us all. Rest in peace my friend and many healing prayers to you
