Lynda Brooks Rainey, 76, passed away on Thursday, May 28, 2026. She had been a native of Newport News for 75 years. Lynda was a retired Teacher’s Assistant for the Newport News Public Schools PEEP Program.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Hidenwood, as well as the Church’s Circle 6 and choir, and a substitute organist.
Lynda was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne Rainey; her parents, Ella and Thomas Brooks; her sister, Dianne Brooks; her infant brother, Thomas Brooks; and her dear friend, Tony Aubry.

“Mrs. Lynda” was my instructional assistant in the PEEP program at Gatewood. She loved ‘her’ babies! She enjoyed singing to the children and playing her portable keyboard in the classroom. The special needs children brought her so much joy. I lost contact with her over the years, but thought of her often. Rest in Peace, Mrs Lynda. 💗, Mrs. Donna
