Lisa “Carol” Bateman

Lisa “Carol” Bateman went home to be with our Lord and Savior on Thursday, June 19, 2025. She passed peacefully at home, surrounded by her loving family.

Born to Joseph Homer Johnson and Margie Lee Garner Johnson, Carol has now joined them in heaven, along with her three siblings, Joann Niell, Bobby Johnson, and Donnie Johnson, and her beloved niece, Tanya Niell.

Carol is survived by her devoted husband of 40 years, Larry Dean Bateman; her brother, Ronnie Johnson, and his wife, Carmen Johnson; and her two daughters, Kimberly Michelle Wood and Jennifer Rebecca Burney, along with her husband, Jeffrey Allen Burney.

She cherished her grandchildren: Jodey Allen Burney and his wife, Meghan Anne Burney, Michael Jay Rosso and his wife, Nicole Rosso; and her granddaughters, Janie Rebecca Renee Rosso and Jewlia Alexis Burney. Carol was also blessed with three great-grandchildren: Jace Allen Burney, Josey Anne Burney, and Harlow Marie Young; as well as her adopted grandsons, Chance and Louie, Jayden, and her adopted granddaughter, Mikaela.

Born and raised in Newport News, Carol attended Newport News High School and made it her home until 2004 when she moved to Gloucester County, where she reconnected with old friends and made new ones.

She was known to be the rock of our family. Carol loved deeply and wore her heart on her sleeve. Anyone who entered her heart became a part of her family. You knew you were family when Carol offered you a drink from the fridge and a plate of food from the stove. She will be profoundly missed, more than words can express.

The family will receive visitors at Peninsula Funeral Home, located at 11144 Warwick Blvd., Newport News, on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM. Her funeral will take place on Thursday at 12:00 PM. Burial will follow at Peninsula Memorial Park, located at 12750 Warwick Blvd., where we will lovingly commit her body back to the earth.

A dinner in Carol’s honor will be held at Faith Outreach Fellowship House at 2:00 PM.
