Karl David Gleaton, 84, lovingly known as Poppie by his family, passed away Friday, January 2, 2026, after a tragic accident. Karl was born and raised in Holly Hill, South Carolina. He graduated from Holly Hill High School in 1959. He began working at Newport News Shipbuilding (X65) in 1961 and retired in 2003 after 44 years of service.
Karl was preceded in death by his parents, George and Nettie Gleaton, and his brother Gene Gleaton. He leaves behind to cherish his memory his son Karl David Gleaton, Jr., his grandson David Travis Gleaton (Mary Alice), his great-grandchildren Lillian and Finnegan, and his former daughter-in-law Charlene Gleaton.
He is also survived by his brother Dickie Gleaton and sister Annette Myers, both of South Carolina, and many cherished nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Peninsula Funeral Home. A private graveside service will be held at a later date and time.
