Joy T. Johnson

Joy T. Johnson, 84, devoted wife, mother, Mamaw, sister, aunt, and friend, peacefully departed this world on Saturday, November 29, 2025, at home. She is now reunited with many family members who preceded her in death, including her parents, Victor and Blanche, brothers, Larry and Jack, sisters, Lorena and Carolyn, nieces, Cindy and Marsha, and great-nephew Cody.

Joy is survived by her loving husband of 62 years, Ernest; daughter, Vicki, son-in-law, Cory; grandson, Brady; sisters Deloris and Yvonne; and a host of much-loved nieces and nephews.

Joy was born on December 9, 1940, in Dickenson County, VA. She spent her early life working on the family farm with her parents and siblings. She often spoke fondly about memories from that time. Joy also enjoyed cooking, crocheting, gardening, and spending time with loved ones.

Joy worked as a secretary, first at the Newport News Shipyard, then for the Hampton City Schools, until she retired in 2007. In 2009, she began her favorite job of all – Brady’s Mamaw. She cherished every moment with him and was the best Mamaw a kid could hope for.

Joy’s family was everything to her, and she was everything to us; she will be loved and missed beyond measure until we see her again.

The family will receive visitors beginning at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 5, 2025, at Peninsula Funeral Home, with a funeral service, officiated by Rev. Glenn Riggs, following at 12:00 p.m. Interment will be in Peninsula Memorial Park Mausoleum.

I was so saddened to see this on the internet this morning. Joy and I worked for many years together in the NNS and became very good friends. We have had many laughs, tears and enjoyed our friendship together. I can say she is in Jesus arms but will always be in our hearts. She has joined my Bud in heaven. My love to all of you. The sweetest, kindest person I ever had the pleasure of knowing and working with for many years in Hampton City Schools. Very sorry for this great loss to her family.
