Jerry John Morewitz

With his stellar style, Jerry has left the stage of life just shy of his 85th birthday. He was raised and surrounded with love by his father, grandmother, grandfather, and many other family members in the quaint Indian River Park neighborhood of Wythe Hampton. Although he grew up in the heart of Hampton “Crabber Country”, he nevertheless attended Newport News High School, all while living in Wythe.

He was the consummate professional who helped build one of the most successful real estate brokerage firms of the 1970s. His work ethic was unequaled, which he learned from his father and grandfather. He was very proud to spend the last decade of his professional life with his son in the family real estate business.

In his early years, he had a passion for horses, cars, and boats, specifically Chris Crafts, once even rebuilding one from an abandoned hull and using a Corvette engine (350 HP) offered up by his old friend Neil Nimmo. Many good times were spent on the James and Warwick Rivers. In his later years, he had a love and affection for cats. Even with four of these furry friends already in his home, when a stray showed up one day, he simply rolled the new arrival into the family.

Dad suffered a stroke and spent the last few years in memory care, and while he had difficulty remembering current events, he could easily recall old friends and family from over half a century ago with ease. A very heartfelt thanks to Sally and Steve Seltzer for their lifelong friendship and loyalty to Dad and for going above and beyond.

Jerry was truly one of a kind, the last of his generation, and will be greatly missed by his three children, Shari (Billy), Sara, Herbie (Deborah), his grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his legendary father, Herbie Morewitz, and by his first wife and the love of his life, Janet.

Services will be graveside Sunday, March 1, at 1:00 pm at The Jewish Cemetery of the Virginia Peninsula, in Hampton. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to your local animal rescue group.

Just got the word of Jerry’s passing. Knew and met him during 70’s and 80’s when he worked for Dick Teagle and as owner/partner at Powell and Morewitz in Buckroe.
He knew the real estate profession like the back of his hand and worked long hours to achieve that right.

May the Lord open the gates and let this wonderful person in.
