James “Jim” E. Lassiter, 93, passed away on Tuesday, July 28, 2026. He was a native of Baltimore, Maryland, and had been a resident of Poquoson, Virginia, for the last 4 years. Jim served in the U.S. Navy and retired after 29 years as a Chief Petty Officer; he was proud of his service. After his retirement, he went to work as an Engineer Analyst for Newport News Shipbuilding for the next 10 years.
Jim was a member of Liberty Live Church and loved going each Sunday, serving as a church usher and greeting people as they entered. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite, and Royal Arts. He loved his masonic brothers and all their activities.
He loved traveling with his wife and family, and especially his grandchildren. He was a true family man. He had a dry wit, loved jokes, and had the most beautiful smile. Jim was a collector – he collected miniature cars, belonged to the train club, and had quite a collection of miniature trains.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Margaret Lassiter, his first wife, Janice, and his daughter, Karen Snead. He is survived by his wife of 15 years, Faye Horne Lassiter; sons, Robert Horne (Michele) and David Horne (Mary); seven grandchildren, Michael Snead (partner Maria), James Snead (Amanda), Christina Gaita (Sammy), Danni Horne, Nicholas Horne, Sarah Vogt (Chris), and Brittany Horne (Ben); three great-grandchildren, Aaron Gaita, August Vogt and Elias Vogt; and his brother, Phil Lassiter (Louise).
He passed at peace, knowing his family’s love for him and grateful for his life experiences.
The family will receive friends on Monday, August 3, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Liberty Live Baptist Church, with a funeral service following at 11:30 a.m. Burial will be at Peninsula Memorial Park.

Jim was a Masonic friend from many social gatherings over the years. He never failed to tease me about both of us coming from Ridgeley, WV, leaving when we were 18 and NEVER looking back! Rest well Jim. You were a joy to know.
My husband and I so loved being welcomed by Jim with his warm smile as we walked into Liberty’s Sunday service. He will be missed, but there is no doubt he is currently greeting at heaven’s door. May our Heavenly Father hold you close during this time of grief.
