Harry John Samos

Harry John Samos, 77, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 18, surrounded by his loving children. Born on October 27, 1948, Harry was the son of the late John and Agnes Samos. A 1970 graduate of the University of Richmond, he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry. During his time there, he was a proud member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity and he participated in the Rifle Corps. Harry began his career as a chemist with VEPCO, where he worked for many years before becoming a co-owner of the Warwick Restaurant in Newport News. Later in life, he continued his professional journey with NASA and eventually worked in computer IT support.

In his younger years, Harry had a love of fishing and boating, finding peace and happiness on the water. He was also an avid fan of science fiction, enjoying both books and movies that sparked his imagination. Harry had a deep love for animals and cared for many pets throughout his life, each one holding a special place in his heart. Music also meant a great deal to him and it continued to bring him comfort and joy throughout his life, even in his final days. Harry will be remembered for his quiet strength and the many ways he touched the lives of those around him. He will be deeply missed and forever loved.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Zelma Samos; his father, John Samos; his mother, Agnes Samos; and his sister, Effie Economou. He is survived by his devoted children, Christi Byrd, Mike Samos and his wife Melissa. He was a proud and loving grandfather to Austin Byrd, Camden Byrd, Rylan Samos, Caroline Samos, and Emmeline Samos. He is also survived by his niece, Lea Holbrook and her husband Jason, and his great-nieces, Lauren Holbrook and Sydney Holbrook.

The family would like to thank the amazing people at Shalom Gardens Senior Assisted Living and Affinity of Virginia for the respectful and compassionate care they provided during the most challenging times in his life.

A Trisagion service, will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 24th at Peninsula Memorial Park. Memorial donations may be made to the S.P.C.A., 523 J. Clyde Morris Blvd., Newport News, VA 23601.

    Harry, I cannot believe it. So sad as you just lost your father, John this past year. My best memories were in the church choir and playing sandlot football with all the Greek boys in GOYA and the Sons. We would never let you carry the ball as you would kill us, being a star player in high school.
