Franko Coleman was born in the small town of Vrtovin, Slovenia on February 25, 1941. His love of automobiles drew him to auto repair and he acquired expertise in many European and Japanese car models. It was known that all you had to do is bring your car to Franko and with one drive he could diagnose the problem without even opening the hood.
His love of family drew him to migrate to Newport News, Virginia almost 50 years ago to be closer to his mother and sister. Within two years of arriving in the U.S., Franko opened his own repair shop – European Motors, Inc. on Harpersville Road. Over the years he amassed a large regular group of customers that he also considered his friends.
He had a huge heart and worked to accommodate the needs of the customers so they could continue to keep their cars on the road and be able to drive back and forth from work. Many a night and weekend saw him working tirelessly to complete work other should have given up at 5:00pm.
He was also quick to help fellow mechanics and share his knowledge with ease. And mentored many a young mechanic over the years.
He was truly a one of a kind gentleman and humble human. His kindness and unique knowledge will be greatly missed by this family, friends and those lucky enough to have met him.
We love you Tata. Rest peaceful and easy and I hope you have many a car to work on in heaven.
The family has chosen not to have a memorial. Franko will be cremated immediately after a viewing by family only. If you feel inclined, please send donations to the American Heart Association or the American Diabetes Association in Franko’s memory.

Franko will be very sorely missed. Off and on for over 30 years he has helped me keep my old Volvos on the road – when no one else could. Helpful, kind, and above all exceeding honest, Franko always made me feel welcome at European Motors. Our hearts go out to Blanka, Robert, and Neli. Franko – Your days of endless work have come to an end. Rest in peace my friend.
I am so sorry. Franko was my husband’s favorite car guy. He would love to stop by the shop and talk with him. Now, they can continue their discussions in HEAVEN!
