Dorothy (Dot) Hinton Powell, 92 of Newport News, VA, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, May 29th, 2026, surrounded by her loving family.
Dot was born on September 9th, 1933, in Johnston County, North Carolina. She was the daughter of the late James Waylon and Ruth Smith Hinton.
Dot was a devoted wife and loving mother. Dot was a marvelous chef. Everyone looked forward to her extravagant Thanksgiving Dinners. Her oyster dressing and giblet gravy were always the highlight of the meal. She was a great baker in her own right and would never reveal her secret Cherry Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe. She would always make them, especially for all her grandsons at Christmas. Dot loved being outdoors. She loved riding in the car and the excitement of looking for deer in the different neighborhoods. Dot always kept a well-manicured lawn that was the envy of everyone. She would enjoy sitting on her porch watching the hummingbirds feed for hours. Dot was one of the most wonderful and sweetest individuals on this planet. We will all miss her dearly.
Dot is survived by her two daughters, Donna Burnett and Faith Eres (Felino), three grandsons, Matthew Burnett, Marcus Burnett, and Blaine Eres (Kim), and her great-granddaughter, Wrenn. Dot is also survived by her sisters, Ruth Avery, Joy Parrish, Franceline Price, and Dale Driver (Randy). Dot is also survived by many wonderful nieces and nephews.
Dot was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, William Ercel Powell, and her sister, Othell Price. In addition, Dot was also preceded in death by her brothers-in-law, R A Avery, Milton Parrish, Robert Price, and Larry Price, nephews, Darrell Price and Van Price.
There will be a visitation on Thursday, June 4th from 1pm-2pm, and a funeral service from 2pm-3pm at the Peninsula Funeral Home, followed by a burial at Peninsula Memorial Park.
