Dennis F. Neill

Dennis F. Neill, beloved husband, father, grandfather, mentor, and friend, peacefully passed away on Tuesday morning, April 1, 2025, at the age of 81. A man whose life was marked by compassion, service, and deep devotion to both his family and his faith, Dennis leaves behind a legacy that will continue to ripple through the lives of all who knew him.

Born in Danville, Virginia, on April 18, 1943, Dennis was the son of Kennedy and Nellie Neill, and the brother of Mickey Neill. He spent his formative years in Danville and lived in several cities before settling in Yorktown and Newport News, Virginia. No matter where he lived, Dennis carried with him a heart for helping others and a desire to make a difference.

Dennis dedicated his life to service in many forms. He was a minister of the gospel with a focus on education and served as an assistant principal—roles that allowed him to pour into the lives of countless individuals, especially children. His efforts extended beyond the church and the school hallways; Dennis was actively involved in numerous community programs aimed at supporting those in need. His work with the Daniel Plan highlighted his commitment to health and wellness, a testament to his desire to see others thrive physically, spiritually, and emotionally.

A proud graduate of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Dennis blended his theological training with a heart of humility and hands eager to serve. Since the mid-1990s, he was a faithful and active member of Northside Christian Church, where his leadership, hospitality, and generous spirit touched many lives. He was known as a great organizer, a man who never hesitated to roll up his sleeves and host cookouts for the kids from church, making sure everyone felt seen and valued.

Above all, Dennis cherished his family. He married the love of his life, Phyllis, on July 10, 1965. Together they raised three sons—Kevin, Keith, and Phillip. Though Kevin and Keith have gone on before him, Dennis held onto their memories with deep love and pride. He continued to share their stories and carry their presence in his heart. He also mourned the loss of his grandson Evan, remembering him with tenderness.

Dennis is survived by his loving wife, Phyllis, his brother Mickey (and Charlotte), and his son Phillip, who, along with his partner Anne, brought joy and companionship in his later years. He was a proud grandfather to Catherine, Mikayla, Trevor, Lauren, and EJ, as well as his great-grandaugther Kamber, each of whom carries forward his spirit of kindness and care. Dennis also held a special place in his heart for all the cousins, nieces, and nephews who have been such an important part of his life. Also, Shannon, a dear friend of the family who was like a daughter to him, and Leslie, a very close friend of the family.

Whether fishing with his sons, mentoring young people, or simply sharing a quiet moment of encouragement, Dennis’s love was constant and unconditional. He will be remembered for his steady presence, compassionate heart, and unwavering commitment to faith, family, and community. He lived a life of intentional love—a legacy that now lives on in every life he touched.

A service celebrating Dennis’s life will be held on Tuesday, April 8 at 10:30 a.m. at Northside Christian Church, with a reception to follow. He will be laid to rest at Peninsula Memorial Park at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to Northside Christian Church in Dennis’s memory.

Though he is no longer with us, the example Dennis set—in how he served, loved, and led—will continue to inspire and guide all those who were blessed to know him.
