David Joe Shelton, 81, of Hampton, VA, passed away on August 29, 2026. David was born in Mars Hill, Madison County, North Carolina, on November 13, 1944, to Milburn Shelton and Viola Davis. He was a graduate of Mars Hill High School, Class of 1963. David was in the U.S Navy from 1963 to 1967. During his time in the Navy, David traveled across the Atlantic Ocean and visited various countries in Europe. He was stationed in Florida when his service ended. David received an Honorable Discharge. Afterward, David moved to Newport News, VA, to be near his family. In 1968, he was hired to work at Newport News Shipbuilding, Department 014. During his time at NNS, David was well-liked by his co-workers and knew they could count on him for any extra help that was needed. David retired from NNS in 2011 after 43 years of service. David moved to Hampton, VA, in 1985, and he lived there after he retired. In his younger years, David traveled to New York many times. In Virginia, David liked to visit Luray Caverns and The Natural Bridge.
David is survived by his sister Robbie Dean of Newport News, VA; nephews Steve Keefer and wife Merlyn of Yorktown, VA; Chris Grimm of Newport News, VA; and Michael Grimm of Eau Claire, Wisconsin. He is also survived by his great nephew Logan Keefer and great niece Ashley Keefer both of Yorktown, VA.
David was preceded in death by his parents; and his beloved partner Maria Baker who passed in 2018. They had been together for 40 years.
The family wants to thank the staff of Atlantic View Nursing Home of Newport News, VA. “Uncle David” had lived there since November of 2025 and the staff made sure he was well taken care of.
