Alton B. Talbert

Alton B. Talbert, affectionately known as “AB”, passed away on October 16, 2026, just two months after the passing of his beloved wife, Ruby S. Talbert. Their remarkable love story spanned 78 years, including 73 years of marriage—a beautiful testament to enduring love, devotion, faith, and commitment.

Born on November 26, 1931, in Albemarle, North Carolina, AB eventually made his way to Newport News, Virginia, where he began his career at the Newport News Shipyard. After a few years, he chose a new path of service and joined the Newport News Police Department.

Through dedication, hard work, and years of distinguished service, AB advanced through the ranks, eventually becoming a lieutenant and leading the Burglary Division. He ultimately retired as a detective after dedicating much of his career to investigating burglaries and helping protect his community.

Even after retirement, AB’s commitment to law enforcement continued. He served as president of the Retired Police Association and worked alongside fellow officers to help solve cold cases. His career reflected a lifelong devotion to service, justice, and the safety of others.

AB was a devoted member of Temple Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and shared in the fellowship of his church family. His service reflected his deep faith in God and his commitment to serving others.

He was a 64-year member of the Fraternal Order of Masons, an organization grounded in brotherhood, fellowship, and service. He served as Past Master of Peninsula Masonic Lodge No. 278, A.F. & A.M., and was a lifetime member of Bremond Masonic Lodge No. 241 in Newport News. His faith, fraternal involvement, and dedication to his community were meaningful parts of his life and enduring sources of connection with those around him.

Family was among the greatest blessings of AB and Ruby’s lives. Together, they raised three sons: David B. Talbert (Brenda) of Randolph, New Jersey; Maury A. Talbert (Debbie) of Smithfield, Virginia; and the late Darren L. Talbert (Deborah) of Newport News, Virginia.

The family they built was a treasured gift, and the love they nurtured continues to flourish through the generations. AB’s legacy lives on through his six grandchildren—Brian Talbert, Kristi Parker, Ashley LeBlanc, Lindsey Talbert, Michael Talbert, and Eric Talbert—and his thirteen great-grandchildren, all of whom brought him immeasurable joy and pride.

Ruby’s passing just two months before AB’s own departure reminds us of the extraordinary bond they shared. After nearly eight decades of love and companionship, there is comfort in the faith that they have been reunited in God’s heavenly kingdom.

As we remember AB, we give thanks to God for the many years He blessed us with AB’s presence, for the beautiful family AB and Ruby created, and for the countless memories that will forever be cherished. In our time of sorrow, we find comfort in the promise of Revelation 21:4, which assures us that God will wipe away every tear and that there will be no more death, sorrow, or pain.

Together in life, together in love, and reunited for eternity.

May AB rest in eternal peace in the loving arms of his Heavenly Father, reunited with his beloved Ruby. May God’s everlasting arms surround their family with strength, comfort, and peace during this time of loss.

Their earthly journey has ended, but their love, faith, and legacy will live on forever.
