William C. (Bill) Dorneman, Jr., 71, passed unexpectedly on June 19.  Bill was a long-time Peninsula resident and a 1974 graduate of Christopher Newport University.  He taught honors history and U. S. government for 31 years at Smithfield High and also served as an assistant football coach, yearbook, and senior class sponsor.  Bill also achieved “Teacher of the Year” recognition.  After retirement, he continued to substitute teach in the Isle of Wight and Poquoson.  He is survived by brother Ross (Jo Anne) and nephews, Jeff Dorneman (Elizabeth) and Ryan Dorneman, and niece, Julie Batt (Robert).  Jeff and Liz’s children (Alexis, Anna, and Bryan) and Julie’s and Robert’s children (Will and Katie) were special to Bill – as were relatives in TX and PA.  Special thanks to the care provided by neighbor, Aaron, and cousin, Donna. He was pre-deceased by both his parents and younger brother, Dale.  Graveside service at Peninsula Memorial Park on Thursday, June 29 at 1 pm.
