Shirley Mason Guy

Shirley Mason Guy, loved by many, passed away at 93 on Wednesday, August 30, 2023, at The Chesapeake in Newport News, Virginia. She was a native of Campbell County, VA, and a resident of Newport News for 70 years.

Shirley graduated from West Hampton/University of Richmond and earned a master’s degree from William and Mary. She worked as an English teacher and Guidance Counselor in Newport News at Warwick High School and Denbigh High School. Shirley married Larry Guy on May 13, 1967, and became a wife and Mother on the same day – just in time for Mother’s Day on May 14, 1967. Upon retiring from the public school system, Shirley volunteered part-time in the Guidance Office of Ferguson High School. She instilled a love of helping and volunteerism in her children. Shirley was a long-time North Riverside Baptist Church member who taught Sunday school, sang in the Choir, and was a Deacon. She was also a strong supporter and advocate of the Ferguson Center for the Arts. Shirley was a proponent of Continuing Education through local universities and philanthropic organizations such as the P.E.O. Shirley and her husband, Larry Guy, loved to share their appreciation of gardening and the arts with their granddaughters.

Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Larry Guy, daughter Susie Littwin, sister Sandra Gorsline, and her parents, Dolly, and Thomas Mason. She is survived by her daughter Jeannie Kunzinger (Fred); son-in-law Mike Littwin; granddaughters, Angie Littwin, Erin Struzzieri (Noah Taylor), Barbara Broussard (Jean), and Mary Kate Kunzinger (Calliope); great-grandsons, Lalo Littwin, Ricky Littwin, Kieran Struzzieri, Sitota Struzzieri, and Duncan Broussard; sister Carol Godsey; brother Thomas L. Mason (Mattie); nephews Lee Mason (Tana), Bryan Fore, Jason Gorsline (Martha); niece Cheri Bentley (Ron); brother-in-law, David Gorsline; sister-in-law, Doris Mason; and numerous great-nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 30, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. at The Chesapeake with Rev. Uwe C. Scharf officiating.

    Jennie, sorry to hear about your mother. She was a great person and friend to all the people she knew in our neighborhood growing up. Knowing she’s resting peacefully with God gives us comfort. Our prayers to you and all your family during this time. She lived a wonderful life.
