Nan Gilbert Churchill

Nan Gilbert Churchill of Newport News, VA, passed away on April 18, 2024. Nan was born on October 12, 1929, in Newport News and lived in Hampton, VA, for her younger years. She graduated from Hampton High School and attended Milligan College for one year. Nan retired from Nations Bank, now Bank of America.  Nan loved gardening and was a Master Gardner, taking the course at 70 years old; she loved the beach, particularly the Outer Banks, and animals, especially her Scottie dogs.  

She was preceded in death by her husband, John W. Churchill, son John Churchill, Jr, as well as her parents, Nelle M. Atkinson and Harry H. Gilbert, and stepfather, James Atkinson.  

Nan is survived by her daughters, Ellen Jones (Lattie) and Nan Betsy Snyder; four grandchildren, Corey Jones, Brooke Francisco, Drew Snyder, and Cortney Smith; and three great-grandchildren.  

Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on April 24, 2024, at First Christian Church, 1428 Todds Lane, Hampton, VA. The family will be at the church by 9:30 a.m. to receive friends. A private burial service will be held afterward for the family.  

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to First Christian Church, Hampton, or your favorite animal rescue. 

The family wishes to thank the staff at Hidenwood Retirement Community, Riverside Hospice, and Riverside Private Duty Care.

    So glad I had made Nan as a friend. It was a short time, but I will always remember her. We met at the Hidenwood and shared our meals together. Betty Sever and I invited her to sit at our table and we had a nice, but short friendship. I have her family in my prayers
