Lehman Shaal

Lehman “Lee” John Shaal, 79, of Smithfield, boarded his final train to the kingdom of heaven on June 13, 2021. He was born and raised in Newport News and graduated from Warwick High School in 1960. He proudly and honorably served his country in the Army National Guard from 1961 to 1967. Lee earned his degree in Accounting and Business Administration in 1969 from College of Hampton Roads. He later retired from Newport News Shipbuilding after 40 years of dedicated service and lived out his last 30 years in his beloved serene home in Smithfield. Lee was an avid model train collector and found great joy in putting on intricate displays at local shows to share his love of trains with the community.

He is survived by his brother, William Shaal (Barbara); children, Gene Shaal (Heather), Kathy Barnette (Steve), Curtis Wampler (Angie), Sherry Davis, Donna Tucker (Sam), and Gerald Joyner (Linda Coats); and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his loving wife, Linda Shaal and his parents, Chester and Elizabeth Shaal.

The family will receive friend from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 17, 2021 at Peninsula Funeral Home, 11144 Warwick Blvd., in Newport News. A funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, June 18, at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Peninsula Memorial Park.
