Katherine Elizabeth (LeFevre) Gatewood

Katherine Elizabeth (LeFevre) Gatewood passed away on Sunday, August 7, 2022.

Mrs. Gatewood was a life-long resident of Newport News who celebrated her 100th birthday in May 2022. She graduated from Newport News High School in 1939 and was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church where she had many friends who stayed in touch with her even after she became a long-term resident of the James River Convalescent Center.

Mrs. Gatewood enjoyed the company of her friends and relatives. Knitting was more than a pastime, it was her passion. She often gifted her work to friends, family, and her care team at the long-term care facility. She enjoyed a good joke and her laughter was a mark of appreciation.

Mrs. Gatewood was predeceased by Robert Tyler “Bobby” Gatewood, her husband of 31 years. She is survived by her two sons: Robert Tyler Gatewood, Jr. and Christine Gatewood of Wilmington NC; and John William “Bill” Gatewood and Blanche Gatewood of Virginia Beach, VA. She had one grandson, Robert Tyler “Bob” Gatewood and Annie Gatewood and two great granddaughters, Julia Ware Gatewood and Ellis Anne Gatewood of Harpswell, ME, and New York, NY.

Her funeral service will be held at 12pm, on Friday, August 12, 2022, at Peninsula Funeral Home, with the interment taking place in Peninsula Memorial Park.

I so enjoyed getting to know Mrs. Gatewood when she made flower arrangements with the NN Master Gardeners at the James River Convalescent Center. She always made beautiful arrangements, not only for her room, but also for others. Her joyous laughter and bright spirit made it so pleasant to be around her. I always looked forward to seeing her. My prayers for God’s peace and comfort are with all the family.

Katherine was my father’s secretary for many many years. Katherine was always so nice and loving and caring every time I went to the office as a child. May she rest in peace!!

Mrs. Gatewood was a precious soul. She loved her sons, as well as all of her family. She was a talented woman in her younger days, something that she has obviously passed on to her extended family. At the end, her only hope was that her family would be okay, and that she would be able to join others in heaven.

Katherine was a great friend of my mother, Ethel Arnold, as they both had many years at St. Vincent church and St. Vincents school participating in many activities together. I know she is resting in peace with Our Lord and again in the arms of her husband. My condolences to Tyler and Bill and their extended family.
