Joanne Allison Coleman

JoAnne Allison Coleman departed this early life on October 19, 2021, at the age of 88 in Newport News, Virginia. Her battle with several serious medical issues in recent years showed her perseverance and strength even while facing debilitating life challenges. A loving and protective mother to four children, five grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren, she was dedicated to family above all else.

JoAnne was born in Valdosta, Georgia, and grew up in the tiny neighboring township of DuPont. The daughter of Robert and Mary Allison, she grew to become a lovely young woman. She shared her childhood with her sister, Virginia, as well as some very special life-long friends. Graduating early from high school, she went on to attend a teaching college in Valdosta and briefly taught in a small country school in her hometown. An adopted brother, John Allison, became part of her family circle later in life, who she loved equally as well.

In 1952, JoAnne met and married Dewey Ward Coleman, a dashing Air Force pilot who was training at nearby Moody AFB. She shared 20 years of travel and adventure with him while raising four children, until his tragic and untimely death in 1973. Although she lost the love of her life, she went on to successfully raise her children with integrity, family values, and strength.

JoAnne is predeceased by her husband, Dewey Ward Coleman, parents, Robert and Mary Allison, sister, Virginia Adams, and many other dear friends and family members who passed before her. She is survived by her four children, Lisa Renee Walker, Michelle Coleman Pauley, Lewis Ward Coleman, and John Dewey Coleman; grandchildren, Natalie Walker Ahlgrim, Jarrod Michael Pauley, Zachary Robert Pauley, Kellie Walker Lawson, and Calvin Tyler Coleman; and her great-grandchildren, Luke Walker Ahlgrim, Colton Michael Pauley, Alyssa Rose Pauley and newborn, Calvin Hudson Coleman. She cherished all of her family members. It was a great disappointment that she could not meet her newest great-grandson but she was so pleased and excited when he entered our family.

A graveside service for family members will be held on Saturday, October 23, 2021, at Peninsula Memorial Park.

Arrangements are under the care of Peninsula Funeral Home, 11144 Warwick Blvd., Newport News, Virginia 23601.
