Janis Lee Rogers

Janis Lee Rogers, 72, of Newport News, passed Tuesday, January 30, 2024. Predeceased by parents Russell Rowe Sr. and Dorothy Rowe of Newport News, her beloved Aunt and Uncle Elizabeth and J. Gayle Rogers of Tupelo, Mississippi, with whom she spent the first three years of her life and whose name she took later in life, and sister-in-law, Connie Rowe.

Janis is survived by her sister Nancy R. Mitchell (husband Manuel); brothers Michael Rowe (wife Wanda) and Russell Rowe Jr.; her niece Dorothy Hager (husband Scotty, grand-nephews Benjamin, Nathaniel, Russell); nephew John Mitchell (wife Christiane, grand-niece Ellis); niece Amber Vargo (husband Adam); niece Amy Cunningham (husband Matt, grand-niece Lillian); and niece Andrea Rowe (grand-nieces Mya, Alli, Isabella, Calyssa, and Penelope). Janis is dearly missed by her longtime friend Celia Stockamp of Georgia and her family, Thomas Mercer, Stephen Mercer, Mary Julia Moore, and Matthew Mercer.

She was a jack of all trades, from nursing school to veterinary tech, lawn care service, snowplow driver, and waitress. She retired from Pepperidge Farms, where she ran a local warehouse and distribution center and went on to drive the parking lot trolleys for Busch Gardens, a job she enjoyed. Lastly, she was an Uber Driver of some fame – having driven one client 397 miles to New York, an Uber record that got her mentioned in the New York Post!

She was a master puzzle worker. Janis would help all comers, a trait she inherited from her father. She loved horses, summers in Maine, golf, the guitar, and singing. Janis will be remembered for unwavering love for her Lord Jesus Christ, family, and friends.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, February 10, 2024, at noon at Peninsula Funeral Home, 11144 Warwick Blvd, Newport News, Va. 23601.
