Hiram Lemuel Morton, Jr.

Hiram Lemuel Morton, Jr. passed away on Saturday May 22nd, 2021 surrounded by his family. He was born on November 25th, 1935 in Washington D.C. He moved to North Carolina at an early age before moving to Newport News where he lived most of his life.

He spent his career at Newport News Shipbuilding where he worked as a supervisor and general foreman in X43 and X44, retiring after 40 years. He was a hard worker and self-made man with a strong work ethic.
Hiram was one of the longest-standing members of Asbury Wesleyan Church in Newport News where he served in various roles supporting the church’s mission. He loved the water and enjoyed being at his beach home in Smithfield where he would spend hours watching eagles and other birds. He was an avid fan of Western TV shows like Gunsmoke and Bonanza and also liked traveling, breakfast at Vancostas Restaurant, and peanut butter.

Hiram is survived by his devoted wife of 65 years, Sandyria Morton; his children Hiram L. Morton III, Sheila D’Agostino and husband Robert, and John Morton and wife Christina Greer; grandchildren Lee Morton (Christy), Christine Morton, Joshua Morton (Kameron), Cody Morton (Ashlyn), Brandon Morton, Sullivan Morton-Greer, Christopher Eames (Nissa) and Shaun Eames (Karen); and seven great-grandchildren Hunter, Christopher, River, Dylan, Luke, James, and Joshua, with another great-grandson Michael on the way in September.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m. on Friday, May 28, 2021 at Peninsula Funeral Home, 11144 Warwick Blvd., in Newport News. A funeral service will be held at 12:00 p.m. Saturday, May 29, at Asbury Wesleyan Church, 605 Harpersville Road, in Newport News. Interment will follow at Peninsula Memorial Park. Masks are recommended. Social distancing will be required.
