Faye Jones

Faye Eggersted Jones, 94, of Newport News, died on August 24, 2023. Faye was born January 13, 1929, in Norfolk, VA, to Edward A. and Cristina M. Eggersted. She grew up in Norfolk, VA, graduated from Granby High School, and attended Goucher College. In 1948, Faye married Robert P. Jones, Jr. (Bob), and they settled in Newport News, VA, where they lived for the rest of their lives. They moved into The Chesapeake Retirement Community in Newport News in 2001.

Faye loved to help others by volunteering; she was one of the first Pink Lady volunteers at Riverside Hospital, where she received awards for over 9000 hours of volunteer service, and she helped lead her daughter’s Girl Scout troop. Faye attended St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Newport News and was an active member of the Altar Guild.

Faye enjoyed playing tennis throughout her life and won several local tournaments. She also enjoyed traveling, camping, sailing (when it wasn’t too windy), and skiing with friends and family. Faye took several courses in Christopher Newport’s Lifelong Learning Program and especially enjoyed learning to paint. At The Chesapeake, Faye was a greeter for new residents, helping them learn their way around, and she regularly re-purposed the large floral arrangements in the lobbies to create small arrangements that she took to residents in Health Care to brighten their rooms.

Faye is survived by two daughters, Christina (Tina) Jones (husband, Dave Cassel) of Madison, IN, and Ridley Jones, of Newport News, as well as four grandchildren, Carrie Jones Gumm (husband, Daniel), Robert P. Jones, IV, Melinda Jones Campbell (husband, Chris), and Elizabeth Anne Kent (husband, Fred), and twelve great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert P. Jones, Jr. (Bob), a son, Robert Parke Jones, III (Parke), and a grandson, Gregory T. Johnson (Greg).

The family is thankful for the employees at The Chesapeake, especially Olivia Perrin, Faye’s aide and caretaker for over four years, who held her hand right up to the end, and the nurses and staff in the Assisted Living, Memory Care, and Skilled Nursing areas, for their care and patience during Faye’s final years.

No funeral service is planned at this time.

In Faye’s memory, please take time to show kindness to someone else in some way.

Arrangements are under the care of Peninsula Funeral Home.

We just wanted to say what a pleasure it was knowing Faye and Bob. We sailed Albacores with them back in the 80’s, enjoying competing on the racecourse and socializing at the after parties. Faye was always cheerful and kept things lively. She and I maintained our friendship over the years when we discovered we were Pi Phi Sorority sisters. She was instrumental in keeping our small Alum Club active for many years.
I have thought of her often since then, always with a smile.
