Emily Rose (Thomann) Squares

Emily Rose (Thomann) Squares passed away on May 21, 2024, at the age of 86 in Newport News, Virginia. She was born on September 17, 1937, in Philadelphia, PA.

Emily was a loving mother to Kimberly (who predeceased her), Linda (Patrick), Harry Jr (June), Bruce, and Keith (Susan). She is also survived by her grandchildren Christopher (Katrina), April (Jordan), Tyler, Timothy (Kiira), Ryan (Destiny), Carli, Molly, and Damian, as well as eight great-grandchildren. Emily also left behind two dogs, Beau and Jada.

Emily dedicated her career to nursing, spending many years as a nursing manager specializing in psychiatry, however her passion for caring extended long after her nursing career ended. Emily was always looking for opportunities to help. She joined her church group on a work trip to Mississippi following Hurricane Katrina, volunteered for many years at Transitions Family Services in Hampton, Virginia, and was a regular foodbank and shelter services volunteer.

Emily’s caring nature also extended to animals; she fostered, adopted and ‘inherited’ more than her share! There was never an animal she would not take in, and never a time she didn’t have treats in her pocket or a few animals resting at her feet. Emily spent countless hours volunteering at the Animal Aid Society in Newport News, Virginia – where she was best known for bringing grilled chicken bites for the dogs.

Emily will be remembered for her kindness, strong will, and determination. Her greatest joy in life was taking care of anyone (or anything!) in need. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

Emily specifically requested no funeral services, wanting to be remembered for a life well lived. Her family honors this wish.
