Dr. Walter S. Price

Walter S. Price, MD, 101, of Newport News, passed away on October 3, 2023, after a brief illness. Dr. Price was born on March 7, 1922, to Dr. and Mrs. Walter W. Price of Washington, D.C.  Walter was a graduate of Dartmouth College, Dartmouth Medical School, and the University of Pennsylvania Medical School. He served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1956 and was stationed in Germany in 1947-1948 during the Berlin airlift.

In 1952, he became Chief of Pediatrics at Tripler Army Hospital, the youngest Chief ever at a major army medical center. Dr. Price entered private practice in 1956. He practiced at Hampton General, Riverside, and Mary Immaculate Hospitals. He was a beloved physician who was devoted to his patients, providing skilled pediatric care to several generations for over 50 years. In recognition of his contributions to his community, Dr. Price received the Lifelong Citizenship Award from the City of Newport News in 2023.

Dr. Price enjoyed tennis, golf, and woodworking and was a long-time member of the James River Country Club. Above all, he loved his family and friends.

Walter was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Dr. John W. Price and Robert N. Price, and by his son, Walter W. Price. He is survived by his daughter Susan P. Shroyer (Edgar) of Greensboro, NC, and son Jeffrey S. Price of Amelia Island, FL; five grandchildren, Patricia Shroyer (Cameron), Jeffrey Shroyer (Josephine), Erin “Leon” Shroyer all of Greensboro, Nicole Price and Shannon Price, both of Northern California; and five great-grandchildren, Taylor, Susan, Grace, Price, and Wellington.

A memorial service will be held Monday, October 16, at 1:00 p.m. at the Peninsula Funeral Home. Dr. Price will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Mariner’s Museum, 100 Museum Drive, Newport News, VA 23606.

    A wonderful Man, and an awesome Dr., Was so good to my grandsons, They loved him and happened to have the last name of Price! Adam and Trevor Price!

    An amazing man with such a Kind heart. I first met Dr Price at my cousin Lewis’s funeral . He spoke beautifully of there friendship and the memories they shared. Rest in heaven Dr Price I know you and Lewis are having a ball .
