Cheryl McRae Goodman
Cheryl McRae Goodman went to meet her Lord and Savior on Thursday, February 24, 2022 in the privacy of her home in Newport News, Virginia. She was a native Texan having been born in Monahans, Texas on January 4, 1945. She was very proud of her Texas roots. She later made her home in Virginia in 1987. Cheryl started working at the shipyard in Newport News, Virginia as a secretary and administrative assistant in 1988. She worked in several different departments such as Facilities, Ship Repair, and the Apprentice School. She retired from the shipyard in 2012 after more than 24 years as a Legal Secretary.
Cheryl loved her family and friends. She loved her life. Spending her time with them gave her sincere joy. She found happiness in most everything in her life. She enjoyed drawing and painting, but she most enjoyed scrapbooking. She had a room dedicated to bringing her memories to life through that art.
Recently, her greatest focus was on her house and life in Avon, NC on the Outer Banks. She would spend this special time watching the sun rise and set with her husband Willie, reading, shopping, decorating the house, and cooking. She absolutely enjoyed preparing meals for the entire family. And the family enjoyed it too because her cooking was legendary.
Cheryl was preceded in death by her parents, Edward McRae and Lessie McRae, and by her brother, Don McRae. She is survived by her husband, William “Willie” Goodman; sons, Robert Middaugh (Ellen) and Mickey Middaugh (Juli); grandchildren, Lauren Middaugh, Amy Stoehr, and Ashley Hicks; great grandchildren, Harper and Scarlett Middaugh; and sisters, Peggy LeVrier, Ida Morrow, Leta Hughes, and Sharen Lummus-Blackbird (her forever twin).
A memorial service celebrating Cheryl’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 6, 2022 at Peninsula Funeral Home. Please see :

Such a shock when I saw this on the shipyard website yesterday. Cheryl was a dear friend. This co-worker, bunko teammate and red-hatter sister will miss her dearly.
She was very special to me. I never stopped loving her. I know she is with our Lord Jesus. She was instrumental in leading me to Christ. My sympathies and love reach out to Robert, Ellen, Lauren, Harper, Scarlett, Mickey, Juli, Amy, Ashley, and Willie. May the Good Lord Bless you all.

How can I ever find the words for such a wonderful friend ? Our friendship goes away back when we were crazy little girls. Cheryl was the friend I could go to when I needed a special helpful hand. My prayers and love goes to Willie, Sharon, and all the family and all the friends, for she had many. I know God has a special place in his garden for OUR Cheryl.
