Caroline Coleman Parcell

Caroline Coleman Parcell of Alexandria, VA, died unexpectedly in Newport News, VA, on June 16, 2023.  She was the daughter of Lloyd and Alice Parcell, lately of Locust Dale, VA, and born on September 6, 1972, in Richmond, VA.  She was preceded in death by her father and is survived by her mother, brother Stanard C. Parcell of Richmond, nephew Timothy Parcell, niece Allison Parcell Wayne (Nick), sister Rebecca Parcell Fass (Tommy) of Newport News, and nieces Claudia and Emma Fass.

Born with a rare genetic disorder, Prader-Willi Syndrome, Caroline nonetheless lived a full and happy life.  Through the auspices of the nonprofit Community Systems, Inc., she enjoyed living in an apartment with a caretaker and having a daily routine of going to Service Source, where she made greeting cards for veterans, did Zumba and Yoga, and learned computer skills.  She had the most loving and dedicated caregivers, Mariatu, Tai, and Stephanie, who were like family members to her.  They made sure she was able to live her best life and indulged her in her great loves – movies, puzzles, dinosaurs, horses, butterflies, Scooby Doo, and especially her Gameboy!

All of our thanks to the staff of Community Systems, Service Source, the Fairfax/Falls Church Community Services Board, and lately, the James River Rehabilitation and Convalescent Home.  In particular, the family would like to thank Mariatu and Naomi for being a second mother and sister, Tai for knowing and often anticipating Caroline’s needs, Stephanie for movies and nails, and Tammy (Big Mama) for helping Caroline believe in herself during her recovery and making sure she always looked adorable!  Many others at James River played a big part in the miracle that happened when Caroline was transferred from INOVA, from the nursing staff to the different therapists – please know that you made Caroline’s last months happy and fulfilling.  She was taken too soon, but not before bringing laughter, joy, and amazement to all around her.

A memorial will be held on August 5 at 10:30 a.m. at Orange Presbyterian Church in Orange, VA.  Donations can be given to the church (https://www.orangepc.org/), the Prader Willi Syndrome Association (https://www.pwsausa.org/), or Community Systems, Inc. (https://communitysystems.org/).
