Betty W. Pearson

Betty Winters Pearson, 91, passed away peacefully at home on October 16, 2021.  Betty was born on September 4, 1930, in Baltimore and raised in the North End section of Newport News.  She attended Newport News High School where she made many friends, some of whom she remained close with until her death.

In June of 1950, she married the love of her life, Neville Pearson. He reentered the Army during the Korean War and Betty subsequently supported her husband throughout 20 plus years of Army service at posts across the United States as well as in Japan and Germany.  She loved being an Army Officer’s wife and had many fond memories of the service and the lifelong friendships it brought.

Betty and her family returned to Newport News in 1967 and settled in Denbigh where she rekindled many friendships from her youth.
She was a true southern lady who was a wonderful cook and loved to entertain family and friends.

She was a longtime member of First Baptist Church and served as a greeter on Sunday mornings for many years.
She also loved to shop and enjoyed building relationships with the salespeople in the stores she frequented.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Lieutenant Colonel Neville A. Pearson, Sr. (U.S. Army retired), and her parents, Jack Winters and Ivy Heywood Winters.  She is survived by her two children, Neville A. Pearson, Jr. (Wendy) of Newport News and Mark J. Pearson (Cindy) of Matthews, NC; three grandchildren, Sarah Pearson Garner (Justin) of Carthage, NC, and Matthew Pearson (Sara) and Annie Pearson, all of Charlotte, NC; two great-grandchildren, Charlotte Garner and Savannah Garner of Carthage, NC and her sister, Romaine Ross of McLean, VA.
