Betty Fowler Carpenter Sims

Betty Fowler Carpenter Sims, 94, passed away on Monday, July 17, 2023, at her home in Chickahominy Haven, Toano, Virginia. She was born on July 13, 1929, at Riverside Hospital. Betty graduated from Newport News High School in 1946. She graduated from Southern Virginia University, followed by Old Dominion University. Betty taught in the Hampton School System for 30 years and was awarded Teacher of the Year in 1974.

She hopes that she made a difference in a child’s life and improved their life. She enjoyed many years of tennis, spending time with friends, family boating and skiing on the Chickahominy River, and traveling to many Redskin games.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Bill and Bobbie Fowler (Quisonberry); first husband and true love, George Edward (Sonny) Carpenter; second husband and companion of many years, Walter Blackie Sims; daughter-in-law, Candy Carpenter; and grandson, Chris Carpenter.

She is survived by her sons, Toy Carpenter, and Bill Sims; three grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter. The family will receive friends at Peninsula Funeral Home on Sunday, July 23, 2024, from 2:00 to 4:00 P.M. A graveside service will be private.

Arrangements are under the care of Peninsula Funeral Home.
