Linda King Olson, age 75, passed away on August 25, 2021, at her home in Newport News, surrounded by family. Linda was born in Marion, VA, and was preceded in death by her parents Verlin S. King and Margaret B. King, and her brother David S. King. She is survived by her husband of 52 years, David Bruce Olson, son Aaron Hunter Olson, his wife Katherine and grandson Luke of Richmond, VA, son Michael Craig Olson of Newport News, VA, sister Connie K. Bullock of Piney Flats, TN, and brother Michael L. King of Charlottesville, VA.

Linda was a graduate of the College of William & Mary and a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. Outgoing, intelligent and always putting others above herself, Linda was a dedicated and talented teacher. She touched the lives of children by sharing her love of history and inspiring students to exceed their own expectations. During her tenure at McIntosh Elementary School, she was honored as the Newport News Elementary School Teacher of the Year and received the Organization of American Historians Tachau Award recognizing her vision and leadership as a passionate advocate of history education, both in her own classroom and at the district and regional levels.

A loyal friend and community volunteer, Linda was a member of the Junior League of Hampton Roads. Her love of cooking and hospitality led to her role in helping to create The William & Mary Cookbook. She was also a member of Hilton Presbyterian Church. Linda loved her family and carried on the inherited tradition of gardening, creating a beautiful home in Newport News that was the site of many wonderful gatherings of family and friends. Her genuine care and generosity were reflected in the blessing of many exceptional lifelong friendships.

Linda retained her passion for US history, interning and ultimately serving on the board of the Museum of Frontier Culture in Staunton, VA, and regularly visiting Jamestown Settlement, Yorktown, and Colonial Williamsburg. Three years ago, she was a participant in the laying of markers for Revolutionary Patriots for three family ancestors at New Bethel Presbyterian Church in Piney Flats, TN, which is the final resting place of seven generations of her King side of the family.

The family would like to express their deepest appreciation for the many dear friends, doctors, nurses, and caregivers who provided support to Linda and her family during her illness.

A memorial service will be held in the fall. Burial will be at a later date in the family cemetery.
