Walter Gaylord Lockett

Walter Gaylord Lockett, 84, of Seaford, VA, passed away on January 22, 2022, at Mary Immaculate Hospital, Newport News, Va.

Gaylord was born September 9, 1937, in Washington, DC, the son of Reverend Walter M. Lockett and Helene E. Lockett (Booth).

Gaylord graduated from Harrisonburg High School in 1955, then went on to graduate from the Newport News Shipbuilding Apprentice School in 1957. Gaylord retired from the Newport News Shipyard after a career of 44 years.

Gaylord married Clare “Jean” Lockett (Leighton) on October 29, 1986, in Seaford, VA.

“Believe me my young friend, there is nothing – absolutely nothing – half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats.” ‘The Wind in the Willows.’ 

Gaylord was passionate about every aspect of boating, from building boats, piloting boats, patrolling waters and training others in boat safety. He was an active member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary and the Hampton Roads Power Squadron. 

Gaylord was a charter member of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, Yorktown VA.  He was also an active Mason in Warwick Lodge #336.

He is survived by his wife, along with sons Jeffrey Moosman (Shari), Michael Moosman (Karen); step-daughters, Deborah Mounger (John), Robin Wagner (Roger), Sandra Majher (Matthew); grandchildren, Amy Maddox, Christopher Maddox (Alice), Andrew Wagner, Michael Majher (Molly), Kyle Wagner, Sara Simmons (Gabriel) and Christine Majher; great-grandchildren, Robert Maddox, Ethan Maddox, Noelle Majher, Emma Maddox and Rose Majher; sister, Caroline Cherry (Lockett); niece and nephew, Helen Spiridellis and Greg Cherry.

Preceding Gaylord in death are parents, Reverend Walter Lockett, Helen Lockett (Booth) and step-mother Virginia Lockett.

Services will be held at a later date at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, Yorktown, VA.
