Sybil Merritt Jolly

Sybil Merritt Jolly, 89, passed away on January 6, 2023, at home in Carrollton, VA with her family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mike L. Jolly; her parents, Ruby K. and Edgar E. Merritt; and her siblings, Vasti Barnes, Hilda Milliken, Jacqueline Gnemi; and Charles Merritt. Sybil is survived by her children, Doug Jolly of Carrollton, and Donna (Phil) Villiott of Midlothian; and grandchildren, Matthew and Catherine Villiott.

Sybil was born and raised in Chadbourn, NC. She graduated from Chadbourn High School. Sybil continued her education and attended business school in Charlotte, NC. From there, Sybil relocated to Miami Beach, FL and worked in banking. While in Miami, she married her high school sweetheart, Mike and relocated to Newport News, VA. They were married for 64 years until Mike’s death in 2019.

Sybil was an active member of Liberty Live Church (Liberty Baptist), in Hampton for 58 years. She had a lifetime of service working on the Welcome Team, Flower Committee, VBS and singing in the Adult Choir. Sybil was known for her always present smile and she loved to write cards to encourage others. After raising her twin children, Sybil re-entered the business world and later retired from the Trust Department at Bank of America.

Sybil enjoyed her retirement home on the James River with her husband, Mike, for 25 years. She passed away and entered heaven after a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s disease. We are grateful for our family and many friends. We also want to thank Barbara and Rita who were her loving caregivers. Lastly, we would like to thank our Lord and Savior for a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, and nurturer. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Chapel of Liberty Live Church, 1021 Big Bethel Rd., Hampton, VA on Thursday, January 12th, 1:00 p.m. with the Rev. Joe Hunt officiating. A visitation will be held prior to the service at 12 noon. Interment will follow in St. Luke Memorial Park, Smithfield.
