Nancy Fiege Kent, 78, of Newport News, departed this life to be with the Lord on Monday, January 31, 2022. She was the daughter of the late James Davis Fiege and Sally Rollins Fiege.

Nancy is survived by her devoted husband of 55 years, Joseph Donald (Don) Kent; daughter Ashley Kent Spells of Alexandria, Va., (Christopher); sister Joyce White (Paul) of Williamsburg, Va., sister Annette Selfe of Williamsburg (Kenneth), sister-in-law Lesa Hawn of Newport News; as well as many special nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews.

Born and raised in Newport News, Nancy enjoyed a carefree childhood with her two older sisters in the Beaconsdale area of the city. Her intelligence and love of reading and learning emerged early, making her a star pupil when she graduated from Warwick High School in 1962. The most joyful part of her life began in December 1965 when she met the love of her life, Don, whom she often referred to as her rock. They were married eight months later on August 27, 1966, in Nancy’s childhood home. For a short time, they lived in Don’s hometown of Hampton, Va., later settling in Newport News. 

Nancy was employed for several years at Virginia Electric and Power Company and left the workforce to pursue her dream of motherhood. In August 1977, Nancy and Don welcomed their only child, Ashley. Always nurturing and attentive, Nancy completely devoted herself to full-time motherhood and was fiercely proud of her daughter’s accomplishments, both big and small. 

Nancy began a second career as an elementary school library assistant in Newport News Public Schools, where she introduced the world of reading to many young children until her retirement in 2010. Known for her independent nature, love of history and current events, quick wit and sarcastic humor, and affinity for straight talk, Nancy stood much taller than her 5’2′ frame.

 Her strong presence and passionate spirit will be deeply missed by all who loved her. Though she has left her earthly home, the family knows that Nancy is now with Jesus, who is holding her hand for eternity. 

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, February 5, 2022, at First United Methodist Church, 10246 Warwick Blvd., Newport News, VA 23601. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church.
