Joyce Ann Hughes Carroll

Joyce Ann Hughes Carroll, born January 2, 1940 in Portsmouth, Va., went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ whom she loved and spoke of often, on Monday, April 12, 2021, after suffering a stroke on February 28.  She accepted Christ as her Savior in 1975 and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, where she served on a variety of committees.  Among her favorites were the Baptismal Committee and Vacation Bible School.  Joyce loved missions and missionaries, whom she prayed for and generously supported.   She had a tender heart and was often prompted to respond to people’s needs in tangible ways.

Joyce attended Granby High School in Norfolk, Va.  Upon graduation, she began working with the City of Newport News in the Commissioner of Revenue’s office for C.B. Harrell and continued until her retirement in 1991, after over 35 years of service.
Don and Joyce moved to the Chesapeake Retirement Community in 2014 where they resided until each of their passing.

Joyce was preceded in death by her husband, Donald L. Carroll; parents, Walter and Ruby Mouring Hughes; and brothers, Douglas and Donald Hughes.  She is survived by her cousin, Pat Mouring Kessler, as well as extended family and many friends.
Gifts may be made in Joyce’s memory to the Mission Fund at Maranatha Baptist Church, 221 Hampton Hwy., Yorktown, VA 23693, or to World Hunger  at Poplar Springs Baptist Church, 5270 Charles City Road, Richmond, VA 23231.
