Elizabeth Paupore Walz

Elizabeth Paupore Walz, 82, passed away suddenly on Thursday, January 5, 2023. She was born in Spalding, MI, on July 13, 1940, to Harry and Florence (Popp) Paupore. She was the eighth of nine children.

A graduate of St. Mary Catholic High School in Lake Leelanau, MI, she moved to Tidewater Virginia as a young woman where she met and married Joseph Walz. They settled in Newport News, VA, where they raised three children.

Elizabeth earned her teaching degree from Christopher Newport University in Newport News. She taught elementary school in Newport News for more than 30 years.  She moved to Sedona AZ after retirement to live near her sister Phyllis and enjoy the fresh desert air.

She was an avid reader and animal lover. Elizabeth owned horses as well as numerous dogs and cats. Her favorite activities include book club, card playing, traveling, and spending time with family and friends. She was an incredibly generous and kind person who touched many people.

Elizabeth was preceded in death by her former husband, parents, and siblings: Harry Paupore Jr., Florence Paupore, Jack Paupore, Chick Paupore, Tom Paupore, Annette Plamondon, Mary Nedow, Phyllis McDevitt and Carol Jane Paupore. She is survived by her children, Kim (Bill) Payne, Tom Walz (Claire Gahret), and Greg (Susan) Walz; grandchildren Will Payne, Marie (Taylor) Emory, Tim Walz, and Chris Walz; one soon-to-be-born great-granddaughter; brother, John Paupore; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, friends and her cat, Boots, and dog, Pippin.

A memorial mass will be held at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, Harpersville Road, Newport News, on Thursday, January 12 at 11:00 a.m.

Arrangements are under the care of Peninsula Funeral Home, 11144 Warwick Blvd., Newport News, VA 23601.

    I just heard about the sad news of “Aunt Betty’s” passing. My condolences go out to her family. Aunt Betty was a very caring and decent person. She is and will be much missed.
