Elizabeth Bain O’Donnell

On February 17, 2021 Elizabeth Bain O’Donnell, 98, peacefully slipped into eternal rest. She was born in Petersburg, Virginia on July 17, 1922 to Charles Leonard Bain and Bess Chick Bain. She was preceded by her “Sugar Bear” James Edward O’Donnell, her husband of 67 years.

Liz is survived by her daughter, Bonnie O’Donnell Mershon; sister, Libby Bain; dear friend, Anona Hogwood; and her dear friends of 40 years, Dave and Karla Hause.

Liz retired from the Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company after 32 years. In her youth, Liz studied and played the Golden Harp for 10 years under Hazel Moses, Richmond Conservatory. She played for many different functions, was one of the youngest at that time to play the Angel Harp, and also played on broadcasts from WRVA radio in Richmond, Virginia. Liz graduated from Spotswood Business School.

In retirement, Liz played golf with the Cardinal Clippers Women’s Golf Association of Deer Run in Newport News and was thrilled when they invited her (a high handicapper, ha ha!!!) to become an Honorary member of their organization.

Liz was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. She fondly remembers meeting for breakfast with the OLOMC Hardee Girls after Mass on Sundays at Hardee’s.

The family would like to thank Dr. Mark Souther and his staff, and the staff of The Huntington at the Newport Assisted Living for the many years of care given to her. She will be sorely missed by all that knew her.

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 2, 2021 the Bain’s gravesite in Saint Joseph Roman Catholic Cemetery in Petersburg, Virginia. Arrangements are under the care of Peninsula Funeral Home, 11144 Warwick Blvd., Newport News, VA 23601.
