Douglas Dwyer

On August 30, 2021,  Douglas Dwyer, 78, passed away. Douggy, as he was known to family and friends, was born on January 14, 1943 in Hampton, VA to Francis and Mariam (Jones) Dwyer.  In his youth, he worked at The Newport News Shipyard and Camp Okie. He received his bachelor’s degree from the Virginia Tech in 1965, and owned Dwyer Insurance Agency with his family in Hampton Roads. On May 8, 1965, he married Dolores Anne VanDyke. They raised two sons, Geoffrey and Jeremy, and one daughter, Theresa.

Doug was an accomplished athlete.  He had a passion for Riverside Wellness & Fitness Center basketball, playing full-court well into his late 60’s and was a fan of Virginia Tech & Apprentice School football. After college, he played on a local select basketball team (The Microphonies) sponsored by a radio station, and competed at the Hampton Coliseum. He also loved to walk the nature trail in Winders Pond. His commitment to staying active was admired not only by friends and family, but also by all the neighbors he passed each day on his six-mile walks. He was a Hampton native, and played football alongside his two brothers, Buzzy and David for Hampton High School.

Doug made volunteering in the community a priority.  He was a member of the Hampton Host Lions Club and later the Hampton Mercury Lions Club to help the blind, where he served as president. Additionally, he volunteered for the Salvation Army standing in the freezing cold ringing the bell to help others.  He was known for his quick wit, corny jokes, and his loyalty to his family and career.

Doug was preceded in death by his father, Francis (Frenchy), his mother, Mariam (Pud), brother David, and sister-in-law Janie. He is survived by his wife Dolores, his three children, Geoffrey (Vikki), Jeremy (Meenal), and Theresa, his brother Buzzy, sister Pat, sister-in-law Nancy Myers (Bruce), grandchildren Olivera, Zach, Nikhil, Hunter and Jaya.
In lieu of flowers, family requests that a donation be made to your local Lions Club in honor of Doug Dwyer.

Arrangements are under the care of Peninsula Funereal Home, 11144 Warwick Blvd., Newport News, VA 23601.

So sorry to learn of Dougs passing. I would see Doug out walking in all kinds of weather and admired his stamina and dedication to exercise. We moved from Winders Pond August 16th. I know he will be missed by his family and friends. Greg and I send our condolences to the family.

Doug and I played intramural basketball at Virginia Tech. He was a great athlete and a good friend in college. He will be missed by all.
