Cynthia McCaffrey

Cynthia Young McCaffrey, beloved daughter, sister and mother, age 56, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Friday, January 28, 2022 at The Chamberlin in Hampton, Virginia. Born on November 20, 1965, in Newport News, Virginia, she moved to Poquoson, Virginia when she was in elementary school and subsequently graduated from Poquoson High School in 1983. After high school, she went on to receive her Associates degree from Thomas Nelson to become an RN through their cooperative program with Riverside School of Nursing.

Cindy was always the funny, gregarious one who could make everyone laugh. She was grandiose and able to charm everyone who met her. Cindy loved being a nurse in her early career and could leave you in horror and stitches (pun intended) with the tales of her Riverside ER adventures as a top trauma nurse. Despite her fear of flying, she flew as a transplant nurse to help recover organs and save lives. When she could no longer work bedside, she worked at ECPI to teach other nursing candidates. Music spoke to her soul, and she loved to sing with her beautiful Alto voice. She passed on her love of music to her children.

It was Cindy’s desire to return to her childhood, waterfront roots and have a view overlooking the water, which prompted her to move into the Chamberlin with her Great Dane Luna to live out her retirement. Even though she had only recently moved into The Chamberlin, she and Luna were the life of the party and are remembered fondly by the residents.

Cindy was preceded in death by her parents, George Ronald and Jean Askew Young, son Chad Joseph McCaffrey, her grandparents on both her maternal and paternal side and numerous beloved aunts, uncles and cousins. She is survived by her sons, Michael Joseph Babcock and Caelen Joseph McCaffrey; her daughter Mary Katherine Jean McCaffrey; sister Catherine Dawn Barnaby; Godmother Betty Jean Moore; and her beloved Great Dane, Luna.

With the current Covid situation, the family has elected to remember her privately and there will not be a memorial service. We thank The Chamberlin and Peninsula Funeral Home for their guidance and assistance during this difficult time.

Arrangements are under the care of Peninsula Funeral Home, 11144 Warwick Blvd., Newport News, VA 23601.
