Billy Jess Lackey

Billy Jess Lackey, 77,  passed away in Richmond, VA on Wednesday, October 13, 2021. He was born on September 26, 1944, in Newport, TN. After graduation from Hampton High School in 1962, he joined the Marines in 1965 and served until 1968. He worked as a machinist welder and pipe-fitter in nuclear power. Billy enjoyed fishing and hunting and he was an avid baseball fan and rooted for the New York Yankees because they were the first team he ever watched on TV as a kid.

Billy was preceded in death by his wife Kathryn M. Lackey; father, Jess Lackey; mother, Ennis Lackey; sister, Barbara Jean Day; brother-in-law, Bobby Day; and brother, Larry Jay Lackey.  He is survived by his two sons, William J. Lackey (Trevor) of Minnesota and Michael J. Lackey (Michelle) of King and Queen Court House; sister, Carolyn Mooney of Hampton; brothers, William T. Lackey (Ollie) of Georgia and Gary Lackey (Betty) of Maryland; brother-in-law, Jack E. McCallum of Newport News; three sisters-in-law, Nancy McCallum of Delaware, Peggy Arnold (Jerry) of Carrollton, and Kitsy M. Miller (Glenn) of Isle of Wight County. Billy also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He will be deeply missed by his family and all who knew him.

A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, October 19, 2021, at 1:00 p.m. in Peninsula Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, please make memorial contributions to the care facility that supported Bill and other veterans, Holbert Top Care, 3406 Montclair Rd. Richmond, VA 23223.

Arrangements are under the care of Peninsula Funeral Home, 11144 Warwick Blvd., Newport News, VA 23602.

    cecil baker nd wife betty gail grew up with Billy. cecil nd billy were good friends. cecil loved him like a brother. he let cec stay in his backyard in his camper. the drank a lot of beer tougher. I worked at mallorys nd billy nd I became very good friends. we r camping like billy nd cecil did so many times. we will miss him dearly. lifelong friends. cecil nd bg

    all the baker brothers especially cecil grew up in copeland Park with Billy. we both went to school together. cecil nd billy were like brothers. cecil stayed in Billy’s backyard in his camper nd they drank a lot of beer until late nite. I also went to school with Billy. I worked at mallorys nd we became good friends. we all will miss him very much.
