Yvonne C. Gregory of Newport News, Virginia died on Saturday, April 5, 2025 after a brief battle with cancer.
Yvonne was born in 1937 in Capahosic, along the York River in Gloucester, Virginia, the only daughter of William H. Carter, Jr. and Artemesia T. Carter. She was raised in Hampton, Virginia and graduated from Huntington High School.
Yvonne attended Antoich College in Yellow Springs, Ohio, majoring in French, and studied abroad in Besancon, France before graduating. She obtained a Master’s degree in Education from George Washington University, and later studied at the University of Caen in Normandy, France.
For much of her adult life, she lived and worked in Silver Spring, Maryland as a French and English teacher for the Montgomery County school system. It was at this time that she met and married her husband, the late Michael Gregory, and started a family with her only child, son Jonathan Gregory. She always remained close with her extended family, her fellow faculty, and former students.
Yvonne’s passions included art, literature, music, and cinema. She was an accomplished and avid bridge player, belonging to multiple bridge clubs over the years in the places she lived.
Yvonne embraced local culture, attending plays, art exhibits, and concerts across the Hampton Roads area. Travel was another passion and she enjoyed visits with her grandchildren to Europe and the Caribbean, as well as many trips with her companion later in life, the late Arthur Stanton of Norfolk. She enjoyed most time spent with family near the Chesapeake Bay.
Yvonne is survived by her son Jonathan Gregory, daughter-in-law Beth, and grandchildren Will and Kate Gregory; her brother-in-law Dan Strauss of Maine; and her sister-in-law Lynne Edwards of Maryland.
Memorial services will be held at a later date in Virginia and Maryland.
