Andy Anderson, 79 of Newport News passed away peacefully on December 9th, 2024, at the
Veterans Administration Hospice Center in Hampton overlooking the beautiful Chesapeake Bay, where he spent many of his days fishing.
Andy was a native of Newport News and was the son of the late Edward L Anderson and Hazel
Anderson. He attended Warwick High School and Hargrave Military Academy, graduating in 1965.
During his time at school, he excelled on the rifle team and in the wrestling club. After graduation Andy attended North Carolina Wesleyan, again excelling in his wrestling. After two years of
attendance, and in the middle of the Vietnam War, he decided to enlist in the US Navy. After bootcamp, Andy attended Underwater Demolition School and E.O.D training in Jacksonville, FL. After meeting all requirements, he became a member of the US Navy Explosive Ordinance Disposal team. He spoke of this accomplishment often his entire life and held this honor very highly.
During his service in the Navy, Andy married Cynthia Patton of Winchester, Va. Shortly after he
started a career with NN Shipyard. During this time, they had two sons. In 1979, his job would take him and his family across the country living in many different states. His work allowed him to
participate in the construction of multiple nuclear power plants. After time spent out west, his job
would bring them back to Virginia in the late 80’s. He then switched careers to Naval design work,
where he would eventually retire.
During his lifetime, Andy had many passions, including horseback riding, hunting, fishing, boating, diving and enjoying long rides on his Harley-Davidson. One important place to him was Chesapeake Hunt Club, where he was a life member. He was well known to tell long stories that everyone had probably heard before, yet listened as if it was their first. He created many friendships while instilling the love of the outdoors to his sons.
Our father is survived by his two sons, Erik Anderson (Stephanie) and Ryan Anderson (Faith); a granddaughter, Taylor; a grandson, Ryder and a grandson, Tucker King. He is also survived by several cousins and extended family across the country.
A visitation will be held for friends and family on December 19th at Peninsula Funeral home between 5-7pm. A family graveside service will be held Friday December 20th at 3pm at Peninsula Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to the Veterans Administration Hospital in Hampton. They provided exceptional care to our father during his final time with all of us.

Andy was a great man and great friend…. will certainly miss him at the hunt club…. he was a solid fixture there for many years…. wonderful obituary explaining his “DASH”….
Good man. Spent meany hours riding our motorcycle together.
He will be in my thoughts. 😢
Leon and my brother, Eddie Addison, were best friends growing up. They were always together as they lived in the same neighborhood. Leon was a big help to me when my brother passed away. He led the Harley Davidson club to meet my brother when he was coming home for burial. Leon took care of everything. I hope someone will do the same for him. Leon was a wonderful caring person that loved the outdoors. So sad to hear of his passing. This is from “Eddies little sister, Donna”! Love you buddy!
Thinking of you and your family Ryan. Sending love and hugs.
