William G. Via, Sr., 88, passed away peacefully on November 3, 2025. Born on March 1, 1937 to the late Effie Gray and Granville M. Via, he was a proud native of Vinton, VA before making Newport News his lifelong home. For 72 years, William built his life, business, and legacy in the Hampton Roads community he deeply loved.
A hardworking entrepreneur and master craftsman, William was the founder and owner of William G. Via, Sr., Inc., a successful painting and contracting company known for quality workmanship and genuine dedication to his clients. For decades, he took great pride in his craft, leaving behind a standard of excellence and integrity when he retired after 65 years of business.
William was preceded in death by his sisters Frances and Julie and brothers, Frank and Malcom.
He is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Sylvia Via; his sons, William G. Via, Jr. (Mary), David Via (Linda), Michael Via (Crystal), Doug Via (Tiffany), and Darrell Via (Kelly); grandchildren, Andrew Via, Alexandra Williams (AJ), Matthew Via (Brooke), Michael Via, Andrew Via (Tyra), Stephen Via (Amber), Christopher Via, Isabel Via, Faith Via, and Seth Via and Katelyn White; and great-grandchildren, Tiegan Williams, Summer Via, Scarlett Via, Mila Via, Naomi Via, and Zachary Via.
William’s legacy will endure in the community he helped build, the family he cherished, and the lives touched by his kindness and craftsmanship. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.
A private family service is under the care of Peninsula Funeral Home.
