With heavy hearts, we share the passing of Thelbert “Bert” Ray Hammond – a beloved husband, father, grandfather, veteran, and friend – who left us on Wednesday, October 29, 2025, at the age of 88.
Born in Montvale, Bedford County, Virginia, Bert was one of seven children raised by Thurston and Viola (Holdren) Hammond. He proudly served in the United States Air Force, retiring as a Master Sergeant after 20 years of dedicated service. He was also a lifelong learner, earning a business degree from the University of Maryland and a Masters of Business Administration from Auburn University.
After his time in the military, Bert brought his talents to Newport News Shipyard, where he worked in computer programming and played a role in advancing naval engineering and technology.
In June 1967, Bert married the love of his life, Theresa (Terry). Together, they shared 58 years together, enjoying a beautiful life filled with laughter, love, and family. He is survived by Terry and his two sons, Thelbert (Julie) and Christopher, and his grandsons, Zachary and Conner, who made him incredibly proud.
Bert was preceded in death by his sisters, Mildred Hammond and Bessie Akin, and his brothers, Thurston Hammond, Jr., Paul Hammond (Thelma), Wilmer Hammond, and Phillip “Phil” Hammond.
He was happiest outdoors, whether golfing, hiking in the mountains near his childhood home, working in the yard, or sharing a fine scotch with friends and family. Bert’s sharp wit, hardy laugh, and quiet wisdom touched those who knew him.
His legacy lives on through the stories shared and the values he instilled. Bert will be remembered not only for his accomplishments but also for the legacy of his sons and grandsons. His contributions, both personal and professional, left a lasting impact. As we celebrate his life, we honor the values he stood for and the example he set for future generations.
Memorial services will be held at a later date.
